It seems that the URL they want is the feed address, but it has to start with http:// not feed:// which is the way it displays in the browser when you click the RSS button.
(it would be nice if they had put that in the instructions rather than making us do trial and error)
I finally entered it this way
http://karenwinters.com/kblog/feed and it automatically created a syndicated "free" account.
I did a test this morning and it appears that the feed is working for LJ members
I'm documenting this here in case any other users have the same trouble I had, and want to know what finally did the trick.
